I was humbled when contacted recently for an interview with a local magazine. Seriously, why do they want to talk to me, Kate Ellis? I’m just doing what I do that pays for my life. I don’t enjoy THAT question to be honest, that is “what do you do?”. It normally comes straight after “where are you from?”. Sometimes I wished people asked “what do you dream about?”, alas most people do not and my standard answer to the standard question is “I go away to sea”. Note, I have noticed cruisers seem to care a lot less about “what we do”, maybe that’s why it’s fits us so well. Like minded people.
Alas before I digress too much on my dislike of quickly putting people in to boxes by using their job as a way to define them or figure them out quickly, the article went to print recently and with trepidation I ordered a copy since I am interstate. I have to say seeing it in print, I am pretty proud and grateful to be featured in the most recent issue of a local East Gippsland Magazine (Victoria, Australia).
Gippsland Magazine does a feature each issue on someone from the local area. I am by no means the only woman doing this but it is nice to be recognised from time to time and know that I may just be inspiring a few other young girls or women to realise that nothing is impossible. In all honesty though, it really is just a normal job to me, it’s just that people haven’t heard so much about women doing it. I read somewhere that you should be fearless in your pursuit of what sets your soul on fire. I can’t say I’m 100% there yet but I am working on it. I do enjoy what I do that pays towards our life; we have had and have many more great adventures ahead. I look forward to being closer to that fearlessness in all of my life.
