When we are not sailing the world on Aeolus IV, lugging our trusty backpacks to exotic destinations or plying our trades at sea, we love nothing more than to base ourselves in Rocky, our ’72 VW kombi campervan.
Rocky was bought by Kate as a surprise for me back in 2005, after a few years without a VW in my life…. At the time, his engine was a leaky, smoky mess, the body was a bit of a patchwork rusty mess, the interior was rotten, the electrics didn’t work…. So a little urgent work went into getting the engine, electrics and brakes going, then we got him registered before driving from Adelaide to my new job in Gladstone, QLD. While in Gladstone, we continued his rejuvenation and ended up with a beautiful Chianti Red/Pastel White campervan with completely overhauled mechanical and electrical systems, a brand new custom interior and a new, cooler, more powerful VW motor.
We were nearing the completion of this restoration, when we realized what a shame it would be to leave Rocky in the garage and only bring out on the weekends… Rocky, like us, was born to travel! So travel we did. We both quit our jobs and took off for a slow cruise around most of Australia over the next few years, including a years hiatus in Melbourne and culminating in a move to Port Hedland, in Western Australias Northwest at the end of 2011.
Once we made the jump on to Aeolus in 2014, we relocated Rocky to the southern states which is where we base ourselves now, officially in Beautiful Hobart, but with regular road trips around Tasmania and back to the big island.
